.SO LET ME GET THIS
STRAIGHT...
The
Victorian School System, specifically
in VCE Art Units 3 and 4, used to
require you to produce at least one
major work for they year with a back
up folio. They changed it, you could
just have a tonne of back up in the
year 2000. "Never!" cried
Davo, "I shall createth
something that will outdoeth my
previous outings on papereth. Thy
shall see that thine self is well
capable of performing the task of
makingeth a major work. Eth."
And so beginbs the story of a
masochist.
I'm
warning you now, these works get
pretty deep and serious. I'd gone
through a lot that year, and I
decided that not only could I fill up
my art folios, but it could be
theraputic if I drew what was on my
mind. The end result was a backup
folio of about 60 A4 works, and 15
A3+ works, from which about 14 were
chosen to go into the final book.
That's a lot for 3 terms of work.
Some are lighthearted about the
subject, some are scary, and some are
things that make me shudder when I
look at them again, making me think
"I felt like that?" There
are my own writings amongst the
works, as well as chosen lyrics from
some of my favourite music which I
felt relevant.
The
book was made into four copies, which
cost $150 AUS to print all of them
up. While it did earn me an A+ and a
study score of 43 out of 50 for the
unit, I wasn't chosen for Top Arts,
the VCE exhibition. No matter, I did
what I had to do anyway.
If
you're wondering, I'm better now.
Mostly... :P
.PRETTY PICTURES
The
following are the actual pages of Catharsis,
in their spread groups. I'll try and
explain the basic gist of some of
them, others I'll leave for you to
decide. Some things just need to
remain a mystery.
Things
are labelled here as:
Pages:
Work 1:
Description.
Work 2:
Description.
 |
Cover:
Untitled, really. The
works that I used as the
background images weren't even
part of my initial folio. In fact
they're from drawings that have
been pasted into my own diary.
None of the other works just
suited the cover. |
 |
00 - 01:
Contents and
introduction. Yep, that's the
angel found elsewhere on Davo
Productions, and used to be one
of the two mascots, Boraelis.
This just sums up what the book
is, and what the works are. |
 |
02 -03:
Porcelina of the Vast Oceans:
One of my first full
blown pen sketches, A3 at that.
Based around the images in my
head from a Smashing Pumpkins
song.
Lift:
A Radiohead song, an old
favourite. I just new what the
image I wanted was, but I ended
up recolouring it anyway. |
 |
04 - 05:
What's the Frequency, Kenneth?:
R.E.M. this time,
depicting about how I fely I was
treated sometimes. It's sort of
about not fitting in...
Thru the Eyes of Ruby:
Smashing Pumpkins again.
This. Song. Is. Amazing. The song
is really about questioning
feelings, what they're really
worth. |
 |
06 - 07:
Cherry:
Smashing Pumpkins again,
but the lyrics aren't here this
time. A little hard to explain.
Giving up a halo isn't as obscene
as you might think.
Quiet:
No, it isn't a Korn (tm)
doll. I hate Korn. I just took my
bad day and put it on this page.
Spontaneous writing, as well... |
 |
08 - 09:
Human:
The centrepiece of the
Catharsis book, the original is
in black and white and at an A2
scale. lyrics from Radiohead
songs: How I Made My
Millions and
Lull. A tribute. |
 |
10 - 11:
I Will Not:
Indeed.
Stop Whispering:
Indeed. |
 |
12 - 13:
Are You What You Pretend To Be?:
My part social
commentary, plus seemingly sloppy
photoshop brush work. I know what
I'm doing.
Catharsis:
The freedom of
expression through artwork. This
takes bits from my diary. I'm not
explaining it. |
 |
14 - 15:
Obsessive/Compulsive Muse:
Acrylic work. Yes
indeedy. Watch me get bored and
hide an Eva and Sonic in there. |
 |
16 - 17:
Thank You:
Plus the credits page. A
thank you to my friends... Well
duh. Um, that webpage address
isn't correct anymore. Shite. |
E-Mail: masked_ferret@hotmail.com for
any comments, queries or criticism
(CONSTRUCTIVE criticism... Flames will be
dealt with...) (Creatively...). And any
job offers, etc. They'd always be of
help.

Useless
Information:
My initial art project for the
year 2000 was going to be a life size
portrait of an angel, wing-span included.
This was vetoed to let me do the 19cm
book, which proves once more that size
doesn't matter (it would have been damn
impressive, though...).
